Cognitive-behavioural therapeutic programs for working with adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (L1 ASD) requiring support

Streszczenie

The article presents a description of selected cognitive-behavioural methods used for working with adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (level 1 ASD). The introduction presents the history of the disorder along with the basic problems identified in the group of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. The following section provides basic information on cognitive-behavioural techniques frequently used in the group of adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. Exemplary social skills training programs, i.e. PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relationship Skills) and MASSI (Multimodal Anxiety and Social Skills Intervention), were described. Two programs used for enhancement of communication skills in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders were characterised – SST (Social Skills Training) and activities based on Social Stories. Two other, widely known programs used for working on communication skills were only mentioned and were not described in the article. These were Coping Cat program and Exploring Feelings program. The Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations program was mentioned as a method useful for cognitive restructuring process. Applied Behaviour Analysis and activity plans were presented as exemplary methods of behavioural interventions. Also, two types of support group programs based on cognitive-behavioural methods were mentioned – MYmind group program and a program based on MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). The summary attempts to explain the rationale for using cognitive-behavioural methods in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.
